Overworld

November 30 - December 30, 2023

Midsummer is pleased to present Overworld, an inaugural exhibition of new photography on view from November 30 — December 30, 2023. Featuring dynamic works that characterize a pensive atmosphere comprised of disparate locales, human intervention, and the passage of time that charges the exhibit with an anthropocentric narrative.

Kip Harris’s work — executed in a wide format — captures the passage of time regarding the atmosphere and cloud cover. Gauzy landscapes emerge from the mist ahead of what may be a coming storm.

Chen Zhao presents images that reflect the world through an anthropological lens conjuring a liminal state of longing.

Alexia Coudrin approaches her subjects with a documentary style, focusing on personal identity and human interaction. Throughout most of the works, Coudrin embodies an intimacy with people who are absent or far away. She fixes her gaze on what people have left behind. In Tenerife a lone tree stands in stony scabby soil near a tarmac road; its trunk is used to support scrap lumber. Concrete blocks of flats occupy the background, underscoring the absence of people and our effect on our environment.

The exhibition features the works of three artists: Alexia Coudrin, Kip Harris, and Chen Zhao.
